
Longest-serving veteran Mohamed Elneny set to leave Arsenal
Arsenal midfielder Mohamed Elneny is set to leave the Emirates at the end of the season, according to confirmed reports, announcing his departure during his final interview with the club. The Egyptian will leave north London after his contract expires at the end of the season.
Mohamed Elneny began his youth career with Egyptian club Al Ahly in 1997. He joined Al Mokawloon in 2008 and played for the youth team before being promoted to the senior team in 2010. After played 35 matches with the Egyptian team, he was loaned to Basel in January 2013.
Impressed by the 31-year-old’s loan spell, Basel signed him permanently in May 2013. He made 144 appearances for the Swiss club before joining Arsenal in January 2016 (Stats via Transfermarkt). During his time at the Emirates, he also spent a season-long loan spell at Besiktas during the 2019-20 season.
According to Arsenal’s official website, Mohamed Elneny will leave the Emirates Stadium this summer at the end of his contract. The defensive midfielder has been an integral part of the team since joining the North Londoners under Arsene Wenger.
The Egypt international is the Gunners’ longest-serving male player, having spent the last eight years at the club. Mo is one of the last links still connecting the club to the Arsene Wenger era. He was signed by the Frenchman and played with Mikel Arteta in his first months at the club.

The 31-year-old won the FA Cup in 2017 and has also won two Community Shields during his tenure. The midfielder has played a total of 161 matches for the club in all competitions, accumulating 6 goals and 10 assists (Stats via Transfermarkt).
Mohamed Elneny has expressed his gratitude to the fans, the club and everyone he was associated with while playing for Arsenal. He said:
“It meant a lot to me to be here for so long, it was the best eight years of my life. I love this club so much, I love the fans, I love everything about Arsenal.
“It breaks my heart – that’s why I refused to go on the field [on the lap of honour] because I was so full of emotion. But that’s life, my time here is over and I’m very proud of what I’ve done for this club.
“I love these fans and I gave everything I had. I appreciate everything they have done for me, in good times and bad, and they will always be in my heart forever.
